15 Common sense beauty “rules” for everyday fabulousness…

Looking and feeling good doesn’t have to be a complicated process. Here are a few common sense rules that will help you on your way.

Rule 1: Less is More

Don’t pile on your beauty products. If you use multiple products, use thin layers. After cleansing: use treatment products first then serums and essences, then creams, then oils. Easy!

Rule 2: Moderation is always your friend

skincareLife is the only thing that should be lived to the full. Everything else should be done in moderation. That goes for work, food, exercise, makeup, skincare…everything.

  • Work hard, but leave time for fun.
  • Eat well, but remember that it’s fuel for life, not an emotional fix.
  • Exercise to be strong, but don’t turn it into torture (it shows on your face).
  • Love your makeup, but don’t let it hide your own beauty.
  • Take care of your skin, but don’t smother it.

Rule 3: “Green” or “Organic” isn’t necessarily BETTER when it comes to skincare

Products only have to include ONE organic ingredient to be classed as organic so you may not be getting as much “natural goodness” as you think you are. Read the ingredient list.  If the organic ingredient is near the bottom of the list it is only a small quantity anyway.

Ingredients at the top of the list are used in the greatest concentration. The lower you go, the smaller the percentage used.

Rule 4: Start using anti-ageing products earlier than you think

Many of us go through to our thirties on nothing but facewash and a basic moisturiser because we believe heavier creams will give us acne and blocked pores. If you are worried about being too oily during the day, use an anti-ageing night cream or serum at night and remember your SPF during the day.

Rule 5: Get the basics right

This one is from our French sisters:

Having great hair and skin along with a healthy body provides a good foundation. You can walk out the door in jeans and a t-shirt with basic makeup, your hair in a ponytail and look fabulous. As YOU!

Take care of the basics and everything else will fall into place.

Rule 6: Manage stress

Stress and external pollutants send the immune system into overdrive which can cause redness and inflammation. Keep your stress levels under control to prevent breakouts.

There are LOADS of meditation apps out there to help you declutter your mind. Try yoga or pilates to tone and strengthen your body and to help you relax.

Rule 7: Your skincare should change with the seasons

Study your skin and how it changes from season to season. You might have oilier skin in summer and dry patches in winter. You should adjust your skincare accordingly,

Winter: Cold weather, central heating and colds can affect your skin in winter. Windburn is common if you exercise outdoors when it’s really cold whereas central heating dries out the air in your home. Breathing through your mouth when you have a cold can cause dry chapped lips while frequently blowing your nose can leave it red and raw.

TIP: Adjust your skincare routine to include skin oils to nourish dry skin and heavier moisturisers to provide your skin with a barrier against dry or cold air.

Summer: Skin becomes more oily during summer months because of heat and humidity. Exposure to sunlight and heat can enlarge pores and make pigmentation and scars appear darker.

TIP: Adjust your skincare routine by using lighter serums to prevent excess oiliness, a toner to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores as well as a sunscreen to limit sun damage.

Rule 8: Get into a routine

By cleansing and moisturising your skin, you protect it from environmental pollutants, infection and premature ageing. We all know that you should take your makeup off before bed, moisturise and wear SPF. But do we know why?

Makeup looks lovely, but shouldn’t be worn for more than 12 hours at a time. Sebum, dirt and environmental pollutants need to be washed away along with your makeup to allow your skin to breathe and repair.

Dry, patchy skin is more susceptible to infection because of microscopic tears and cracks in the skin surface. Wash your skin gently and moisturise to help it retain its elasticity.

Be gentle when cleansing and treating your acne prone skin. Harsh chemical products strip the skin, leaving it red and blotchy over and above the blemishes. Over-exfoliating and burning the skin with chemicals can lead to even more acne. So, be gentle.

sunscreenRule 9: Wear your sunscreen

It is important to wear SPF all year, not just when it’s sunny. Winter sun can be damaging to the skin as well.

Use a high SPF in summer with a lighter formula so that your foundation doesn’t slide around.  It’s also a good idea to have an SPF in your foundation.

In winter you can use a slightly heavier cream formula SPF to help protect your skin from cold and the watery sun.

Rule 10: To Botox or not to Botoxbotox

Research has found that because Botox affects the nerve endings, it can actually accelerate the ageing process. You can also build up a resistance to the treatment over time. The moral of the story? Don’t start too early. If it ain’t broke…..

Rule 11: Research your prescription

antibioticsContraceptives and antibiotics can aggravate hyperpigmentation.

Contraceptives: Because contraceptives affect the hormonal levels in your body, they can trigger melasma which is more commonly referred to as ” the mask of pregnancy”. This causes darker spots on the upper lip and forehead but can also affect the rest of the face.

You can use prescription retinol (from your doctor) or lightening creams on the affected areas. The Ordinary by Deciem has a Hyperpigmentation regimen that works wonders.

Antibiotics: Both topical and oral antibiotics can induce inflammation in the skin, resulting in hyperpigmentation. These dark areas should begin to fade when you stop taking the antibiotic but may require treatment to lighten them. The following ingredients can cause darkened areas:  tetracycline, minocycline, sulfonamides, metronidazole.

Rule 12: Eat well

There is no point in spending a fortune on your skincare if you counteract all their hard work by eating junk!

Your skin is a great indicator of what is going on in your body.

Our skin is part of the body’s elimination system. The toxins in the food we consume are expelled through the skin where they can cause inflammation. Your skin can appear blotchy, spotty and red because it’s working overtime to get rid of toxins.

Eat properly for great skin! Makeup and creams can’t fix your bad habits.

Rule 13: Be smart about breakouts

Stress, hormonal imbalances and environmental pollution can trigger breakouts.

What goes into your body can cause irritation on the skin’s surface. Have you SEEN hangover skin? EEP!

When you get a breakout, don’t reach for the chemical products you used as a teenager to burn zits out of existence. Oil stripping cleansers are too harsh for the skin and can actually CAUSE acne by removing the skin’s own protective barrier.

Go back to basics. Drink water. Gently wash your skin and moisturise. If you are using a multi-step routine, pare it down to a cleanser, a serum, a moisturiser and an eye cream for a week. Then start to add your other products back in. One every week. If one of your steps was making you break out. You will be able to tell.

Use spot treatments on individual spots and keep your hands away from your face. DO NOT SQUEEZE SPOTS. You will simply spread the infection and damage the tissue around it.

Rule 14: Get your sleepsleep_bedroom

Many people pretend that they only need four or five hour’s sleep a night. Eventually, it shows. Your body eliminates toxins, rebuilds damaged tissue and resets the mind during sleep. It needs time to do that.

Rule 15: Fresh Air does wonders

Try to go outside for 20 minutes every day. Natural light and fresh air are great for the mind, body and skin.

So, there are some common sense beauty rules that I wish I had started MUCH earlier.
