How to use green tea for great skin, great hair and a healthy body

Green tea originated in China thousands of years ago. It has many health benefits including the treatment of heart ailments, brain health and even weight loss.

It also has many benefits for the skin! It’s a great anti-aging treatment, it treats acne and it even helps with hair loss! Here are a few ways that you can incorporate green tea into your gorgeousness routine:

 For a glowing complexion

Green tea is known for being anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. It also contains tannins which act as an astringent or toner when applied to the skin. Tannins help by reducing sebum production which is great if you have oily skin.

Apply It

1 green tea bag
1 cup hot water (leave for 2 minutes after boiling before adding tea bag)
Leave to brew for at least 10 minutes
Cool in the refrigerator
Apply to your skin with a cotton pad as a toner after cleansing and before applying other products

This solution can be kept in a small bottle in your fridge for up to three days.

Drink It

Drink 2 – 3 cups of green tea daily to flush out toxins and treat inflammation in the body. This will help to give you a clear, glowing complexion.

NOTE: Save the green tea bags in a container in your fridge or freezer to use on your under eyes!

Green tea contains tannins and antioxidants that help to constrict the little blood vessels around the eyes to reduce dark circles and puffiness. The caffeine in green tea is a diuretic which helps you to eliminate excess fluids from the body.

If you regularly wake up with puffy eyes or dark circles:

 Apply It

2 green tea bags
4 cups hot water
Allow it to brew for 30 minutes
Pour into a clean ice cube tray and freeze

Place the remainder in a container in your fridge to use as a toner.

You can also put the tea bags in the fridge to cool overnight.

When you wake up with puffy eyes, place the tea bags on your under eyes and sit back for five minutes while they work their magic.

If your face is puffy when you wake up, run one of the ice cubes all over your skin to reduce inflammation. You don’t have to rinse it off.

NOTE: Wet the ice cube slightly before you use it on your skin to stop it sticking.

 Drink It

Drink a cup of green tea after breakfast to help reduce puffiness.

It is not recommended to drink green tea on an empty stomach or with your meal. It can affect the absorption of nutrients like iron. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating.

As an acne treatment

Green tea has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Applying green tea to your skin helps to unclog pores, regulate sebum production and kill bacteria. It also helps to reduce swelling and redness.

Hormonal imbalances can cause several kinds of acne. Drinking green tea also helps to regulate hormonal levels in the body.  It also helps to flush out toxins.

Apply It

1 teaspoon of green tea leaves (cut open a tea bag)
2 tablespoons hot water
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix the ingredients together until they form a paste. The tea leaves need to be soft. Apply to your skin and leave on for 20 minutes

Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Drink It

Drink 2 – 3 cups of green tea throughout the day to help regulate hormonal levels and flush out toxins.

As an anti-ageing treatment

Green tea is bursting with antioxidants. It contains polyphenols, vitamin E and C that neutralise free radicals and prevent premature ageing and damage to the skin. Even it’s anti-inflammatory properties help to delay signs of ageing.

 Apply It

1 tablespoons plain yoghurt
1 green tea bag
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon oats

Empty the contents of the green tea bag into the yoghurt and add the other ingredients to form a paste.

Allow it to sit for 5 minutes to allow the oats to soften.

Apply to your skin and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

 Drink It

To make a wrinkle fighting smoothie:

1 green tea bag (antioxidants)
1 cup hot water
1 handful of frozen strawberries or mixed berries (vitamin C)
1 banana (vitamin E)
1 tablespoon chia seeds (omega-3)
1 tablespoon natural yoghurt (alpha-hydroxy acid to exfoliate)

Steep 1 green tea bag in a cup of hot water for at least 10 minutes (it should be strong) and cool to room temperature

Blend with all the other ingredients and enjoy!

As a hair treatment

Green tea’s antioxidant properties help to promote hair growth and retention.  Catechins inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by balancing the amount of testosterone in the body. DHT has been linked to hair loss.

It also contains polyphenols as well as vitamins E and C that promote hair growth and also softens the hair.

Green tea also helps to treat scalp conditions like dandruff and psoriasis with its anti-inflammatory properties.

Apply It

Brew at least a litre of strong green tea by letting at least three teabags steep in hot water until it has cooled to room temperature.

Use the solution as a final rinse for your hair after washing and conditioning it.

This treatment is more for the scalp then the actual hair. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair growth.

Drink It

To get the full anti-oxidant benefit, it is recommended that you drink a cup of green tea at least two hours before lunch and dinner but not before breakfast.

Because green tea contains caffeine it is best not to drink it within two hours of going to bed.

Weight Loss

I know this post is about the beauty benefits of green tea, but here is a quick rundown on the research that has gone into green tea and it’s benefits for weight loss:

Controlled human trials have suggested that green tea increases fat burning and boosts the metabolic rate due to the EGCG compound. The caffeine in green tea has been shown to increase energy output by mobilising fatty acids from fat cells to be used as energy. Not all studies agree however and many people have varying results.

The usual recommendations apply. Green tea helps when used with a healthy diet and exercise routine. It supports your weight loss efforts, it’s not a magic cure.

Well, there you have it, green tea is full of goodness for your skin, hair and body.

Do you drink green tea?
