Rooibos tea, Redbush Tea

The Beauty & Health benefits of Rooibos tea (Redbush)

Rooibos tea is derived from the Aspalathus Linearis bush which is native to South Africa. It is a herb that is fermented to produce a tea with a natural red colour and sweet flavour.

Rooibos contains 50% more antioxidants than green tea and is rich in Vitamin C. The main antioxidant is Superoxide dismutase. It neutralises free radicals and aids in the production of healthy skin cells. It’s a wrinkle fighter in a cup.

South Africans know that Rooibos tea eases digestive discomfort, helps to clear acne and reduces wrinkles. It is also caffeine free, which means that it can be drunk at any time. The tea is also hypoallergenic and has antibacterial properties.

The Beauty benefits of Rooibos Tea:

For Younger Looking Skin

Rooibos tea is full of an antioxidant known as superoxide dismutase. It improves the appearance of wrinkles by boosting the production of healthy skin cells.
It also neutralises damage-causing free radicals.

Anti-ageing Mask

3 tablespoons strong rooibos tea
2 drops rose essential oil
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons rice flour

Steep a rooibos tea bag in half a cup of hot water until it reaches room temperature. At LEAST 10 minutes.

While you mix the ingredients and apply the mask, fill a basin with hot water and add the tea bag. Allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature.

Mix all the ingredients together and apply it to your face, neck and chest. If you have a little left over you can apply it to the tops of your hands.

Leave the mask on for ten minutes and rinse with the warm tea in the basin. Pat dry.

Why it works:

The rooibos tea is your source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It also contains vitamin D and zinc that protect the skin’s lipids and fibroblasts (cell structures) which produce collagen. It also repairs wounds.

Rose essential oil moisturises and tones dry skin. It also has antiseptic and astringent properties.

Apple cider vinegar contains alpha hydroxy acids that reveal healthy new skin by removing dead surface skin cells.

Rice flour is used by Asian women to exfoliate and brighten their skin. It gently removes dark patches and discolouration.

Rooibos Tea Acne Mask

Rooibos tea is rich in polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains zinc which helps to regulate hormones in the body. Zinc also has a mild anti-bacterial effect. The Alpha hydroxy acids in Rooibos help to exfoliate the skin and prevent blocked pores. It also helps to regulate sebum production.

Mask for spots and acne

3 tablespoons strong rooibos tea
1 drop tea tree oil
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons oatmeal

Steep a rooibos tea bag in half a cup of hot water until it reaches room temperature. At LEAST 10 minutes.

Combine all the ingredients and allow to sit for a few minutes to allow the oatmeal to soften and thicken.

Apply the mask to your face and neck or wherever you have spots or acne.

Leave it on for at least ten minutes and rinse with warm water. You can also add the tea bag you used to a basin of warm water and use it to rinse the mask away.

Why It Works:

Rooibos has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that kill surface bacteria. Alpha-hydroxy acids and zinc soothe skin irritation and reduce redness.

Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial and helps to prevent further infections.

Honey is anti-inflammatory and helps to reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne.

Oatmeal helps to soothe irritated skin, removes dead skin cells and absorbs excess sebum.

For Healthy Hair

Rooibos tea can be used to treat skin conditions like dandruff and eczema. It’s anti-inflammatory properties soothe the irritated scalp and help it heal. The high antioxidant content encourages the production of healthy skin cells.

Hair Rinse

Simply make up enough strong Rooibos tea to use as a rinse for your hair. Wash and condition your hair as usual then use the tea as a rinse. Leave it in for 5-10 minutes while you shower, then rinse out.

Why It Works:

Rooibos tea is full of zinc, calcium, copper and potassium. These nutrients all promote healthy hair growth and cell turnover for your scalp.

Copper is even said to prevent premature greying by keeping hair follicles healthy.

The polyphenols in Rooibos also help to give you soft, shiny hair. Because rooibos tea is slightly acidic, it seals the hair cuticle and makes your hair smooth and shiny.

I drink rooibos tea after dinner almost every day. It aids digestion and I hope it keeps the wrinkles at bay! When I was little my mum would give it to us to soothe an upset stomach. Some people say that it tastes slightly medicinal but I find it quite comforting. It has a naturally sweet taste and is available in most supermarkets, usually labelled as RedBush Tea.
Give it a try!
