How to use Wheatgrass for gorgeous skin and hair!

Wheatgrass is the greenest green stuff you will ever put in or on your body. The first time I tried it I was not convinced. It looked and smelled weird and I was even less sure about the grassy/composty taste. I’ve been taking it daily for about a month and it definitely has loads of benefits. It gives me almost instant energy if I take it before a workout. My skin looks really good and healthy and I haven’t had a cold yet!

So, what is wheatgrass? Pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It is the young grass shoots of the wheat plant Triticum aestivum. It grows in the temperate climate of Europe and some areas of the United States.

Why is wheatgrass so good for you?

Wheatgrass is packed FULL of essential nutrients. It is especially high in vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, L and K. It contains over 70% chlorophyll which is a potent antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory as well as 98 of the 102 earth elements that are beneficial to the human body. They include phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. Wheatgrass is also considered “blood builder”, a source of protein and it contains more vitamin A and C than oranges which makes it very beneficial to the immune system.

  • gives you energy
  • helps to eliminate toxins
  • aids digestion and elimination
  • support the metabolism

There is some anecdotal evidence the wheatgrass helps to stimulate the thyroid gland and aids in weight loss but the studies are inconclusive. It has also been reported that wheatgrass lowers cholesterol and that taking wheatgrass during cancer treatment helps to counteract the side effects of the medication.

You can buy the seeds and grow your own wheatgrass on the windowsill in your kitchen or buy the powder from health food stores. The live grass juice is more potent but the taste is also more intense. I prefer the powder mixed with a little water twice a day. You can also add it to soup, mix it into smoothies or even put it in your coffee to disguise the taste if you don’t like it.

How to use wheatgrass for skincare

Anti-ageing: The chlorophyll in wheatgrass contains enzymes that break down superoxide radicals in the body. This repairs and prevents cell damage, slowing down the ageing process. Vitamin A also promotes healthy cell production. By stimulating the production of fibroblasts and collagen it helps to repair UV and environmental damage while keeping the skin firm and wrinkle-free.

Anti-inflammatory: Vitamin E, Chlorophyll and Vitamin A all help to reduce redness, swelling and other symptoms of inflammation due to acne, infection or skin conditions like eczema. Reducing inflammation prevents scarring and allows the skin to heal more quickly. Taken internally, wheatgrass will also help to flush toxins and impurities from the body that cause inflammation and irritation.

Antiseptic: Chlorophyll is known to slow and even stop the growth of unfriendly bacteria. It helps to clear up infections from the body while the vitamins and minerals in wheatgrass strengthen the immune system to prevent further infection.

Anti-Ageing & Firming Mask
2 tablespoons wheatgrass powder
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 small and one larger bowl
Hot water
Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl. Place the small bowl inside a larger one. Add hot water to the larger bowl to warm the mixture. Cleanse your skin of all makeup and apply the warm paste to your skin. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. You might feel that your skin is moisturised enough and you don’t need any other products. It’s a good mask on a night when you want to do skin fasting.

Acne Treatment
1 tablespoon wheatgrass powder
2 teaspoons cucumber juice
1 teaspoon water
Cotton pads
Combine the ingredients together. It will be a bit “watery”. Soak the cotton pads in the mixture and place them on the areas where you have a breakout. Lay back for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. It can be used 2-3 times a week.

Glowing Skin

Skin Irritation or Rashes
2-3 tablespoons wheatgrass
2 chamomile tea bags

Wheatgrass for hair care

Dandruff / Scalp irritation: Wheatgrass has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe skin irritation and itching. Some hair care products contain chemicals or ingredients that unbalance the PH on the scalp. This allows for unhealthy bacterial growth and fungal infections that can cause irritation and flaking.

Dandruff/Irritation Treatment Rinse
4 tablespoons aloe vera juice
1 tablespoon wheatgrass powder or juice
2 drops tea tree oil
Combine to ingredients into a paste. Wash your hair as usual. Towel dry your hair and scalp. Gently massage the mixture into your scalp for a minute. Wrap your head in a warm towel and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse the mixture from your hair and apply a little coconut oil.

Healthy Hair Growth: Both drinking wheatgrass juice and applying it to the scalp improves circulation and oxygen absorption which helps with healthy hair growth. Many forms of hair loss are caused by bad circulation or inflammation and irritation on the skin surface. By improving circulation, the hair follicle receives oxygen and nutrients that keep it healthy. This also prevents the hair from falling out. Wheatgrass contains a high concentration of Vitamin B-complex that promotes healthy hair growth.

Hair Growth Conditioner
1 tablespoon wheatgrass powder
1 teaspoon castor oil
1 tablespoon of your favourite conditioner
Combine the ingredients in a small bowl. Place it in a larger bowl with hot water to warm. Apply the mixture to damp, unwashed hair and wrap in a warm towel to allow to penetrate for 30 minutes. Wash with a clarifying shampoo and style as usual.

Dry / Damaged Hair: Wheatgrass juice is full of Vitamin E, amino acids that build and restore protein and antioxidants that repair environmental damage.

Hair Food:
1 tablespoon wheatgrass powder
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 capsules vitamin E oil
4 Evening primrose oil capsules
Combine the ingredients in a small bowl and place in a larger bowl with hot water. When the mixture is warm, apply it to dry, damaged ends first, allow it to penetrate for a few minutes then apply to the rest of the hair working towards the scalp. Don’t put too much on the scalp as it can weigh the roots down.

Have you tried wheatgrass? Did you get used to the taste?
