Himalayan Pink Salt

Himalayan Pink Salt used to be a health shop thing but these days you will find it in most supermarkets as an alternative to normal table salt. Good old table salt is so processed that it barely has any minerals or nutritional value left whereas Himalayan Pink Salt if FULL of healthy minerals that our bodies need.

You may have seen this pink stuff in the supermarket and wondered about it. There are usually two kinds of Himalayan Pink Salt. You will find it in the cosmetics isle in scrubs, bath salts and bath bombs as a detoxifier or in the condiment isle in larger pink crystals and finer grains.

Where does it come from? Himalayan Pink Salt is mainly mined in the Punjab region of Pakistan. As you can tell from the name it is in the Himalayan mountain range between China and India. The salt range was formed when tectonic plate movement created mountains that effectively isolated a small inland sea. The water evaporated over time leaving the salt behind. Over thousands of years the salt was buried under natural sediment deposits which protected it from environmental pollution. The earliest mention of salt mining in the area is from the 1200’s.

So why is Himalayan Pink Salt so good for you?

Himalayan Pink Salt’s rosy hue comes from it’s high mineral content. Because it hasn’t been processed and bleached, it retains all its minerals and nutrients. The main minerals are iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, chromium, zinc and sulphur.

The mineral molecules in Himalayan Pink Salt are so small that they are easily absorbed through the skin which is why it is such a good option for bath salts. It helps to draw impurities and heavy metals out of the skin and allows the body to absorb essential minerals at the same time.

What are the health and beauty benefits of the minerals in Himalayan Pink Salt?

  • Iron helps to prevent anemia which can leave your skin dull, tired, pale and quite cold. It can even cause hair loss if you don’t get enough. You need iron for your cognitive functions, for blood circulation and to maintain energy levels. It is also important for wound healing as well as providing oxygen to the skin and muscles. A lack of iron can be due to a bad diet, heavy periods or illness.
  • Calcium is important for strong bones as most of us know but your heart and nervous system also need calcium to function properly. It’s also important to prevent osteoporosis, gum disease / loose teeth, muscle aches, insomnia, premenstrual cramps and arthritis. Calcium is also vital for healthy skin cell turnover and helps the skin to produce healthy levels of sebum. If you don’t consume enough calcium, skin cell turnover slows and your skin becomes fragile, thinned, aged and dry. This leaves it more prone to irritation and eczema.
  • Potassium is important for the regulation of the fluid balance in the body. It is also involved in muscle contraction, regulating blood pressure and preventing water retention. Potassium is instrumental in helping your skin stay hydrated from the inside and promote new skin cell growth which helps heal wounds and scars. If you take a look at hydrating skincare products, many of them contain Potassium hydroxide to balance skin PH while also attracting moisture from the environment to hydrate. It also helps to promote hair growth because it encourages healthy cell growth.
  • Magnesium is very important for mental and physical health. It helps to control the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol can also cause acne during very stressful times. Magnesium helps to relieve inflammation and protect the skin from free radical damage. As I said in my post about dealing with the symptoms of PMS, it is very important in regulating hormonal balances in the body.
  • Chromium helps to prevent acne and is essential for metabolic function in the body which is important to maintain healthy cell growth . It balances blood sugar levels which is helpful because fluctuating levels can cause acne and dull skin.
  • Zinc works in the same way as the best known antioxidants but isn’t technically one. It protects against the formation of free radicals not just the damage they cause. It also protects the skin’s lipids (fats) as well as the fibroblasts that help to maintain the skin’s support structure, collagen. Zinc also helps to heal wounds by preventing infection, controlling inflammation and promoting new cell production. This is great for acne sufferers. Zinc is also important in regulating the production of sebum in the skin. As the active ingredient in many anti-dandruff shampoos because it is antimicrobial and controls the oils on the scalp that feed the bacteria responsible for dandruff. It is the overgrowth of natural bacteria on the skin surface that causes dandruff. Zinc’s anti-inflammatory properties also help to relieve the irritation and itching.
  • Sulfur is a natural anti-inflammatory. It is also antibacterial and a mild keratolytic which means that, like salicylic acid, it causes a mild shedding of the top layers of the skin. It helps with conditions like rosacea and eczema because it relieves the inflammation, dry patches or itching. Sulphur depletion leaves the skin vulnerable to free radical damage and collagen breakdown.
